Mental health and wellbeing is something everyone has a responsibility for - whether that means looking after our own mental health, being more aware of how to support and develop mental health in our children, recognise mental stress or illness in family, colleagues and partners, or just become a support and resource for friends.

For too long we have used the term 'mental illness' and only looked at how we treat someone when something like a breakdown happens, or when mental illness is diagnosed. The new mental health strategy - whilst supporting effective treatment and intervention for those with mental illness - also seeks to promote the building of a positive mental health approach. This is all about being aware of how we feel, being able to access coping strategies and talking therapies (counselling etc.) and recognising when things might be moving away from mental health to mental ill-health.

One of the key targets under this new mental health strategy is to look at more effective ways of preventing suicide and self harming behaviour - especially amongst young people.

CRUN is involved in supporting and developing practitioners working with people at risk, and we run courses for professionals around working with 'at risk' young people around their drug and alcohol use. Research shows that there is a high level of correlation between drug, and espcially alcohol use and self harming behaviour/suicide attempts. For more information on this see our drug and alcohol training programmes.

CRUN is working in partnership with the Northern Trust Area Co-ordinator for Suicide Prevention, Gabrielle Nellis, to implement awareness raising evenings throughout the Causeway area.

Contact Gabrielle to find out more information on what is happening in your area - or how to get help and suppport.

Community Mental Health Small Grants Scheme

Coleraine Rural & Urban Network has been successful in securing funding from the Northern Health and Social Services Board through Investing for Health to enable communities to target promoting of mental health strategies. This is part of a regional strategy promoting mental health and suicide prevention in the Northern Health Board area. There is a small amount of funding available to community groups who can demonstrate programmes to raise awareness of health and suicide related issues in the wider community. As there is only a small amount of money available each project will be judged on merit and ability to address mental health and suicide prevention measures.

 Who Can Apply?

Any constituted group in the Coleraine District Council area who can demonstrate an effective project or programme that addresses the promotion of Mental Health and well-being and suicide prevention.

For example: this could be a training session aimed at engaging all sectors of the community and targeting mental health/wellbeing through contact/networking/building skills or self esteem etc. Or it could be an awareness raising session, a support group or an education evening.

 What is Available?

It is anticipated that average grants will be between £200 and £300.
